French Navy

Reaffirming its presence

After a period where defence activities represented a significant presence (10,000 workers in the 1980s, half of which were military personnel), the closure of the submarine base in 1995 meant that Lorient entered a period of reconversion and renovation. The area and the local Defence contingent took stock of the new situation.

After this period of reorganisation, in 2014, the Brest-Lorient Defence Base took on a reaffirmed role in the French Navy. The Pays de Lorient area was home to approximately 3,500 workers in the Defence field.

The Navy was located at 3 geographical entities in the Pays de Lorient area:

  • Quéven-Ploemeur : Base de Lann-Bihoué (2884 personnes)
  • Lanester Rive gauche du Scorff  (1200 personnes)
  • Lorient : Rive droite du Scorff  (180 personnes)

Et le CROSS Etel et Sémaphores  (70 personnes)
